I'll be among the first to admit I had not expected My Morning Jacket to be so versatile and fearless. For "Evil Urges" MMJ might want to call themselves Coat of Many Colors as the band breaks from expectations offering a patchwork of tunes that are all across the board yet still mesh quite well. Though folks will likely react most strongly to the stylized Princely romp of Highly Suspicious, the acoustic daydream embodied by Librarian strikes me as the more amazing departure. With a forays into `70s soul music on Thank You Too and the kinder, gentler `60s rooted Two Halves, MMJ put more distance from their image as just classic guitar rockers---albeit great ones---before pulling you back in with the one-two power punch that end the CD, Smokin from Shootin and Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Part 2. All in all, Jim James and his band mates deliver a classic summertime album, clearly having fun while stirring up enough dust from the fallow ground they have left behind heading on a flight of fancy that will get folks talking and keep people listening.
